Complexes, estates and body corporates
A large share of Johannesburg housing sits under a body corporate or HOA. Many estates in Fourways, Bryanston, Kyalami and the Midrand corridor restrict where a dish may be mounted, or require that it not be visible from the street. It is worth checking the rules before booking; we would rather reschedule than arrive and be turned away at the gate.
Apartments and line of sight
DStv's satellite sits to the north-east. In Rosebank, Braamfontein, Sandton CBD and the denser parts of Killarney and Parktown, the practical question is whether your balcony or roof position can see that arc without a neighbouring block in the way. Sometimes it can't from the balcony but can from the roof, which changes the cable run and the price. We check this before quoting where the building is high-density.
Highveld storms
Johannesburg's summer thunderstorms cause two different problems that get confused. Signal loss during a storm is rain fade — it clears when the storm passes and is not a fault. Signal loss that starts after a storm and does not recover usually means the dish has moved, a connector has taken water, or the LNB has been surge-damaged.
